Dear ones,
I was traveling this week, P and I both giving talks at different universities, with a hearty road trip through the Kentucky hills in between. Because of that, this note is a day late—apologies! My talk was about Rust Belt Femme, and when I speak at universities, I get to do a bit more meta layering, get to dive into the themes of the book (and the process of the book) that you may not catch in the text itself. It was a delight, as always, to be around students who felt some sense of being witnessed in my words. It’s my favorite part of memoir reading—those moments of feeling less alone in the world, more understood. I’m always so humbled when I learn I’ve been able to provide that as a writer.
The topic of sex came up in the talk (it would be hard to talk about my book without it), and also in the swirling media orbit I glanced into on my phone during breaks. In just the past week or two, the exact kind of Sex and Culture happenings that I’m trying to interrogate in this series were central in the news. So with that, here’s a brief Sex and Culture Week in Review:
